Free Guide to Paying Connecticut Traffic Tickets
Understanding Connecticut Traffic Ticket Types and Violations
Connecticut traffic citations fall into several categories, each with different consequences and processes. Understanding what type of ticket you received is the first step in handling it correctly. The state separates violations into infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies based on severity.

Infractions are the most common type of traffic violation in Connecticut. These include speeding, failure to signal, improper lane changes, expired registration, and equipment violations like broken tail lights. Infractions typically result in fines ranging from $50 to several hundred dollars, but do not carry jail time. Many infractions also add points to your driving record, which can affect your insurance rates.
Misdemeanor traffic violations are more serious and include driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and leaving the scene of an accident. Misdemeanors can result in fines, jail time up to one year, license suspension, and mandatory education programs. These violations have significant long-term consequences for your driving record and employment.
Felony traffic violations are the most severe and include repeat DUI offenses, serious injury or death caused by negligent driving, and habitual traffic offender status. Felonies carry substantial prison sentences and permanent license revocation in some cases.
Connecticut also recognizes "moving violations" versus "non-moving violations." Moving violations occur while the vehicle is in motion (speeding, running a red light, improper passing) and typically carry more serious penalties and points. Non-moving violations involve a stationary vehicle (parking violations, equipment violations, registration issues) and usually carry lower fines and no points.
Practical Takeaway: Review your ticket carefully to identify the violation type and category. Check whether it's listed as a moving or non-moving violation. This classification determines your options and potential consequences. Keep your ticket and all related documents organized for reference throughout the process.
How Connecticut Traffic Court Systems Work
Connecticut has a structured court system designed to handle traffic violations. Understanding this system helps you know where your case will be heard and what procedures to expect. Traffic cases in Connecticut are handled through several different court levels depending on the severity of the violation and the defendant's location.

Most traffic infractions are handled in Connecticut's Circuit Court system. Connecticut has twenty judicial districts, and your case will be heard in the district where the violation occurred. Circuit courts typically handle the volume of routine traffic tickets and are designed for efficiency. These courts operate on scheduled court days, often with dozens of cases heard in a single session.
For more serious violations like DUI or reckless driving, your case may be transferred to Superior Court after an initial appearance in Circuit Court. Superior Court handles felonies and serious misdemeanors and provides greater procedural protections, including the right to a jury trial for certain violations.
Connecticut's court system allows several options for handling your ticket without physically appearing in court. You can pay fines by mail, by phone, or online through the Connecticut Judicial Branch website. You can also request a continuance (postponement), enter a plea by mail, or request a trial date. The back of your ticket includes instructions for these options.
Traffic court judges in Connecticut have limited discretion with infractions. Many violations carry set fine amounts based on the offense. However, judges can consider factors like your driving history, the circumstances of the violation, and any hardship in setting final penalties. Judges also have authority to reduce charges in some cases.
Connecticut courts use the "strict liability" standard for most traffic violations. This means the prosecution only needs to prove the violation occurred, not that you acted with intent or negligence. This is why many traffic cases are harder to contest than criminal cases.
Practical Takeaway: Find out which judicial district court handles cases for the location where your ticket was issued. Visit the Connecticut Judicial Branch website (jud.ct.gov) to locate your specific court and find their phone number, hours, and procedures. Note the court date or deadline shown on your ticket to ensure you respond by the required date.
Paying Your Ticket and Payment Options Available

Online payment through the Connecticut Judicial Branch website is the most convenient option for many people. The state operates a centralized online payment system where you can pay fines using a credit card or debit card. To pay online, visit the Connecticut court's website, locate your case, and follow the payment instructions. Processing typically takes a few minutes, and you receive immediate confirmation. This option is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Phone payment is another fast option. You can call the court listed on your ticket during business hours to pay by credit card or debit card. Most Connecticut courts accept phone payments, though fees may apply for credit card transactions. The court phone number is typically listed on your ticket or on the judicial branch website.
Mail payment remains a traditional but reliable option. Send a check or money order to the court address on your ticket, along with your ticket number or citation information. Allow at least two weeks for processing to ensure payment is received and recorded before any deadlines. Do not send cash through the mail.
In-person payment at the court is also available. You can visit the courthouse cashier window during business hours to pay with cash, check, or card. This method provides immediate confirmation, which is useful if you want to ensure payment is recorded right away. However, it requires traveling to the courthouse during operating hours.
Payment plans are sometimes available for people who cannot pay the full fine at once. Contact the court handling your case to ask about installment payment options. Courts consider individual financial circumstances and may agree to a payment schedule. This option prevents your case from going into default while you arrange payment.
Practical Takeaway: Choose the payment method that works best for your situation. If you pay online or by phone, print or save your confirmation receipt showing the transaction details and date. Keep this confirmation with your ticket until you receive official written confirmation from the court that your case is closed and paid in full.
Contesting Your Ticket and Preparing for Trial
Connecticut allows you to contest traffic violations through the court system. You have the right to contest your ticket, request a trial, and present evidence or testimony on your behalf. Understanding your options and preparing properly increases your chances of a favorable outcome.

To contest your ticket, you must request a trial within the timeframe specified on your citation, typically 30 days. You can request a trial by mail, phone, or online through your court's system. When requesting a trial, the court will provide you with a trial date and instructions for preparation. Some courts offer trial by phone or video conference for traffic infractions, which may be more convenient than appearing in person.
Before your trial, gather all relevant evidence and documentation. If the violation involved a speed or equipment measurement, request the calibration records and maintenance logs for the measuring equipment. These records, called "discovery," may be obtained from the prosecutor's office. If the officer's radar gun or laser speed detector was not properly maintained or calibrated, this can undermine the accuracy of the reading.
Document the conditions at the time and location of the violation. Take photos of road signs, visibility, weather conditions, and sight lines at the location where you received the ticket. If witnesses were present, obtain their contact information. Witness testimony can be valuable in showing alternative explanations for the officer's observations.
Prepare a clear timeline and explanation of events. Write down exactly what happened from your perspective, including the date, time, location, weather, traffic conditions, and any circumstances you believe are relevant. Be specific about details. Practice your testimony before the trial so you can present it clearly and calmly.
Research the specific violation statute. Connecticut General Statutes contain the exact language of traffic laws. Understanding the legal elements of the violation helps you identify weaknesses in the prosecution's case. For example, if you were cited for speeding, the statute requires proof that you exceeded the posted speed limit by a specific amount. If the speed measurement is questionable, this element may not be proven.
Consider consulting with a traffic attorney. Many attorneys offer flat fees for traffic ticket representation and can identify legal defenses you might not discover on your own. An attorney can also file pre-trial motions challenging evidence or requesting discovery, which may lead to case dismissal or reduction.
