Free Guide to Renewing Your Wisconsin License Plates
How Wisconsin License Plate Renewal Works
Wisconsin residents renew their license plates through the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The renewal process involves submitting current vehicle information, paying the renewal fee, and receiving new plates or a validation sticker in the mail. Understanding the basic steps helps you know what to expect when your renewal notice arrives.

The Wisconsin DMV sends renewal notices approximately 30 to 45 days before your plates expire. This notice includes your vehicle registration details, the renewal fee amount, and instructions for completing the renewal. The expiration date appears on your current license plates—typically showing a month and year. Most Wisconsin residents renew their plates every two years, though commercial vehicles and certain other vehicle types may have different renewal schedules.
You have three main options for renewing your plates: online through the Wisconsin DMV website, by mail using the renewal notice, or in person at a local DMV office. The online method is the most common approach and takes about 10 minutes to complete. You'll need your vehicle registration number, driver's license number, and a payment method (credit or debit card). When you renew online, the DMV processes your request within one business day, and your new plates or validation sticker ships within 5 to 7 business days.
Mail renewal involves filling out the renewal notice, including a check or money order, and sending it to the DMV address listed on the form. Processing time for mail renewals is typically 7 to 10 business days from receipt. In-person renewal at a DMV office can be completed immediately, though you may experience wait times depending on office traffic. Some DMV offices accept walk-ins, while others operate by appointment only.
Practical takeaway: Check your mail for the renewal notice and note the expiration date on your current plates. This gives you a clear timeline and helps you choose the renewal method that works best for your schedule.
Understanding Wisconsin License Plate Renewal Fees
Wisconsin license plate renewal fees vary based on your vehicle type, gross weight, and fuel type. As of 2024, passenger vehicle registration fees typically range from $85 to $100 for a two-year renewal period. Commercial vehicles, trucks, and vehicles with higher gross weights may have different fee structures. The exact amount is listed on your renewal notice, so you'll know the precise cost before you pay.

The renewal fee includes both registration and plate costs. If your plates are damaged, faded, or illegible, you may need to pay an additional plate replacement fee of approximately $10 to $25. Some Wisconsin residents keep the same plate number through renewal, while others receive new plates. The renewal notice will indicate whether new plates are being issued.
Wisconsin offers several vehicle type classifications that affect renewal fees. Standard passenger vehicles fall into one category, while sport utility vehicles, trucks with specific weight ratings, and commercial vehicles have separate fee schedules. Electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles are registered the same way as traditional combustion engine vehicles, with no special fee reductions at this time. Motorcycle registrations have their own fee structure, typically lower than passenger vehicle fees.
You can pay the renewal fee using several methods: credit card or debit card online, check or money order by mail, or cash in person at a DMV office. Online payments are processed immediately, while checks must clear before your registration is processed. If you pay by mail, mail the check several days in advance to allow time for delivery and processing.
If you need to renew a vehicle that's being financed through a lender, the lender's name may appear on the registration. This doesn't change your renewal process, but you should keep your lender informed of registration changes. Some lenders require proof of active registration as part of your loan agreement.
Practical takeaway: Review your renewal notice carefully for the exact fee amount and accepted payment methods. Keep the notice in a safe place for your records, and don't delay payment as expired plates can result in traffic citations.
Renewal Options: Online, Mail, and In-Person Methods
The Wisconsin DMV website offers online renewal at wisconsindmv.gov. This method allows you to renew without leaving your home or office. To renew online, you'll enter your vehicle registration number and driver's license number, review your vehicle information, confirm or update your address, select your payment method, and complete the transaction. The entire process typically takes 10 minutes or less on a computer or mobile device.

Online renewal has several advantages. Your transaction is processed within one business day, and you receive confirmation immediately. New plates ship within 5 to 7 business days to the address on file. You can renew at any time, including evenings and weekends. Online renewal is also helpful if you prefer a paperless transaction and want an email confirmation. The Wisconsin DMV website is mobile-friendly, so you can renew from your smartphone if needed.
Mail renewal provides an option if you prefer not to use the internet or if you want to renew during times when the DMV website experiences high traffic. Your renewal notice includes a prepaid envelope and all the forms you need. You'll fill out the form, include a check or money order for the renewal fee, and mail it to the address shown on the notice. Processing takes 7 to 10 business days from the date the DMV receives your envelope.
In-person renewal at a DMV office allows you to complete the process immediately and take home your new registration documents on the same day. Many DMV offices are located throughout Wisconsin, and you can visit any office regardless of your county of residence. Some locations accept walk-ins during specified hours, while others operate by appointment. Call ahead to confirm hours and whether appointments are required, as this varies by location.
When renewing in person, bring your current registration, driver's license, and payment (cash, check, or card—accepted methods vary by office). You'll speak with a DMV representative who verifies your information, processes your payment, and issues your new registration or validation sticker immediately. This method works well if you need your registration documents the same day or if you have questions about your registration status.
Practical takeaway: Choose the renewal method based on your timeline and preferences. If you need plates immediately, renew in person. If you prefer convenience and can wait 5 to 7 days, renew online. If you don't use the internet regularly, mail renewal is a straightforward option.
What Information You'll Need for Renewal
To renew your Wisconsin license plates, gather the following information before you start the process. Your vehicle registration number appears on your current registration card and renewal notice—it's an eight-character code that identifies your specific vehicle. Your driver's license number is required for online and mail renewal to verify your identity. Your current address must match the address on file with the DMV, though you can update it during renewal if you've moved.

Your vehicle identification number (VIN) may be requested during renewal, though it's not always required if your registration number is provided. The VIN appears on your registration card and on the dashboard of your vehicle. If your vehicle's registration shows a lienholder (a bank or financing company), you don't need to provide additional information about the lienholder during renewal, as this is already on file.
If you're renewing by mail, the renewal notice serves as your application form. The notice includes your current registration details printed on it, so you simply verify that the information is correct, sign the form, and mail it with your payment. If information on the notice is incorrect—such as your address, vehicle color, or gross weight—you should correct it in writing before mailing.
For in-person renewal, bring your current registration card and driver's license. These documents allow the DMV to verify your identity and confirm your vehicle information. If you've lost your registration card but still have the renewal notice, the notice is sufficient for renewal purposes.
If your vehicle's status has changed since your last renewal—for example, if you've changed the vehicle's primary use from personal to commercial—you may need to provide additional documentation. However, for standard renewals of vehicles that haven't changed status, the information on your renewal notice is sufficient.
Practical takeaway: Keep your current registration card and renewal notice in an accessible place. These documents contain all the information you'll need for renewal, eliminating the need to look up details during the process.
Timeline and What to Do If You Miss Your Renewal Date
Wisconsin license plates expire on the last day of the month and year printed on your plates. For example, plates marked "08/26" expire on August 31,
