Learn About Alaska Airlines Companion Fare Bookings
Understanding Alaska Airlines Companion Fare Program Basics
Alaska Airlines offers a companion fare promotion that allows passengers to bring a travel companion at a reduced rate when booking certain fares. This program is not a frequent flyer benefit or a credit card exclusive, but rather a promotional offer that becomes available during specific periods throughout the year. The companion fare works by providing a discount code that reduces the price of a second ticket when purchased alongside a main ticket at the base fare price.

The program has been a marketing tool for Alaska Airlines since the early 2000s, designed to encourage customers to book travel during promotional windows. Unlike some airline programs that require membership status or loyalty tier achievement, the companion fare promotion is generally marketed to a broad audience. Alaska Airlines typically announces these promotions through email newsletters, their website, and partnerships with various organizations and credit card issuers.
The core mechanism is straightforward: when a promotion is active, passengers receive a companion fare code that can be used to purchase a second ticket at a substantially discounted price. The discount typically ranges from 50% to 75% off the base fare, though the exact amount varies by promotion. Both tickets must be for the same flight and route, though some promotions may offer flexibility on dates or routing.
Understanding the timing of these promotions matters because they are not constantly available. Alaska Airlines releases companion fare offers during slower travel seasons or as part of specific marketing campaigns. These promotions have historically been associated with the airline's credit card product, employer partnerships, and special promotional periods. Tracking when these offers become available helps travelers plan accordingly.
Practical takeaway: Monitor Alaska Airlines' official website and email communications to learn when companion fare promotions are active, as these offers appear periodically rather than remaining continuously available throughout the year.
How Companion Fare Codes Work and What They Cover
A companion fare code is essentially a promotional coupon that must be entered during the booking process on Alaska Airlines' website or through their mobile application. The code provides the discount on the second ticket purchase. The way the booking process works is the customer must book both tickets simultaneously—the primary ticket at full base fare and the companion ticket with the discount applied. Attempting to book tickets separately or at different times will not allow the code to function.

When a companion fare promotion is active, the airline provides specific codes to different customer segments. Credit card holders might receive one code, members of an organization might receive another, and employees of certain companies receive their own versions. Each code is typically associated with specific terms about which flights or fare types qualify for the discount. Reading the terms carefully before booking prevents disappointment at checkout.
The companion ticket must match certain criteria to be eligible for the discount. Generally, the companion ticket must be booked on the same reservation, to the same destination, on the same flight segments as the primary ticket. Some promotions allow the return flight to be on different dates within a specified window, while others require exact matching. The fare type matters as well—companion fares typically work only with base economy or standard fares, not with premium cabin tickets or deeply discounted web-only fares.
Taxes and fees are not discounted by the companion fare code. Both passengers pay the same taxes, fees, and surcharges on their respective tickets. Only the base airfare portion receives the discount. This means if a base fare is $200 and the companion discount is 50%, the companion pays approximately $100 for the base fare, plus taxes and fees identical to the primary passenger. Understanding this distinction helps with accurate budget planning.
The code must be entered at the time of booking; it cannot be applied retroactively to tickets already purchased. If a booking is made without the code, contacting Alaska Airlines customer service to add the discount afterward is generally not possible. This makes careful attention to the booking process essential.
Practical takeaway: Review promotion terms before booking, have your companion fare code ready, complete both ticket purchases in one transaction, and remember that the discount applies only to the base airfare, not taxes and fees.
Finding and Accessing Current Companion Fare Promotions
Locating active companion fare promotions requires checking several information channels, as Alaska Airlines does not maintain a single page listing all current offers. The primary source is Alaska Airlines' official website, where promotions are featured on the homepage or in a dedicated promotional section. Visiting alaskaair.com regularly, especially during off-peak travel seasons, helps identify when new promotions launch.

Email is a major distribution channel for these offers. Customers who have provided their email address to Alaska Airlines receive promotional announcements directly in their inboxes. Those who are part of Alaska's loyalty program, Mileage Plan, typically receive advance notice before promotions are made public. Creating an account on the Alaska Airlines website and opting into marketing communications ensures you receive these notifications.
Social media accounts operated by Alaska Airlines sometimes announce companion fare promotions. Following the airline on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram provides another avenue for learning about offers. However, these platforms may not always provide the complete details, so checking the official website after seeing a social media announcement is recommended.
Credit card partnerships represent another significant source of companion fare codes. Alaska Airlines credit cards issued through Bank of America have periodically included companion fare promotions as welcome bonuses or promotional offers for existing cardholders. Reviewing the terms and benefits of Alaska Airlines credit cards provides information about whether companion fares are currently part of the product offering. Different credit card products may offer companion fares at different times.
Employer and organization partnerships can also provide access. Some employers, unions, and associations have relationships with Alaska Airlines that include companion fare promotions for their members or employees. Checking with your employer's benefits department or employee portal may reveal whether such partnerships exist in your workplace.
News outlets and travel websites sometimes report on significant Alaska Airlines promotions, though these sources may not catch every offer. Setting up alerts or bookmarks to travel deal websites can help, though verifying any information on the official Alaska Airlines site before booking is essential.
Practical takeaway: Combine multiple information sources—the official website, email subscriptions, credit card offerings, and employer benefits—to learn about companion fare promotions when they become available.
Booking Requirements and Important Restrictions
Companion fare promotions come with specific booking requirements that differ based on the promotion's terms. One consistent requirement is that both passengers must travel on the same flights in the same direction. If traveling from Seattle to Los Angeles, both the primary and companion passenger must be on the same outbound flight and the same return flight. You cannot book the primary passenger on one flight and the companion on a different flight using the same promotion code.

Advance purchase requirements vary by promotion. Some companion fares require booking within a specific window before travel—for example, within 14 days of departure or by a certain calendar date. Others have no advance purchase requirement beyond what the airline's general booking policies establish. The promotion details specify any time limitations on when the reservation must be made.
Blackout dates represent another common restriction. Many companion fare promotions exclude travel during peak periods such as major holidays, summer vacation weeks, and spring break. Holiday blackout dates typically include Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's, and similar major holidays. Summer blackout dates often run from mid-June through early September. The specific blackout dates are listed in the promotion terms.
Route restrictions may apply to certain promotions. A companion fare might be available for travel within the continental United States but not to Alaska or Hawaii. Alternatively, a promotion might exclude flights to specific destinations or from specific cities. Reviewing the "where you can travel" section of promotion terms clarifies which routes participate in the offer.
The companion passenger must be a different individual than the primary ticket holder. The companion ticket cannot be used for a lap infant or as a standby seat. Both travelers must have confirmed seats, seat assignments, and baggage allowances according to the fare type selected. International travel typically has different rules, and most companion fare promotions are limited to domestic U.S. flights, though exceptions exist.
Refund and change policies for companion tickets follow the same rules as standard tickets booked under the same fare class. If the base fare is non-refundable, both tickets are non-refundable. If the fare allows changes, both tickets can be changed, though any difference in airfare would apply to whichever ticket has the higher new fare.
Practical takeaway: Before booking, confirm the promotion allows your travel dates, destinations, and passenger combination, and understand the refund and change policies that apply to the fare type selected.
