Learn About Changing Your Colorado DMV Address

Understanding Colorado DMV Address Changes

When you move to a new home in Colorado, you need to update your address with the Department of Motor Vehicles. This change affects your driver's license, identification card, and vehicle registration. The Colorado DMV maintains records for all licensed drivers and registered vehicles in the state, and keeping this information current is a legal requirement under Colorado law.

Your address on file with the DMV serves several important purposes. It's the location where official documents and notices will be sent. If you're involved in a traffic violation or accident, law enforcement uses this address to contact you. Insurance companies also rely on your DMV address when processing claims. Additionally, if you fail to update your address and receive a citation, the notice might go to your old address, which could result in missed court dates or additional penalties.

Colorado law requires drivers to notify the DMV of address changes within a specific timeframe. According to Colorado Revised Statutes, drivers must report changes to the DMV. This is not optional—it's a legal obligation. Failing to update your address can result in administrative complications, including potential issues with vehicle registration renewals or license renewals.

The process itself is straightforward and can be completed through multiple methods. You can visit a local DMV office in person, use mail, or handle the change online depending on your situation. Each method has different requirements and timeframes for processing. Understanding your options helps you choose the method that works best for your circumstances.

Practical Takeaway: Treat an address change as a priority task when you relocate. Delaying this update can create problems with vehicle registration, license renewals, and official notifications from the state.

Online Address Change Process

Colorado offers an online option for changing your address with the DMV, which is often the fastest method available. This service is available through the Colorado DMV website and allows you to update your information from home without visiting an office. The online system is designed to process changes quickly, often within one to two business days depending on the volume of requests.

To use the online service, you'll need your driver's license or identification card number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your date of birth. These pieces of information are required to verify your identity in the system. The online portal uses this information to locate your DMV record and confirm that you are authorized to make changes to your own account. You cannot update someone else's address through this system—only the person whose name is on the license can make the change.

The online form asks you to enter your new address information. You must provide the street address, city, state, and ZIP code. If your address includes an apartment number or suite number, be sure to include this detail. Incomplete address information can cause the update to fail or result in mail being delivered to the wrong location. After entering your new address, the system will ask you to review the information for accuracy before submitting.

One important limitation of the online process is that it works only for changing your mailing address on your driver's license or ID card. If you need to update a commercial driver's license (CDL) or if you have other complications with your record, you may need to visit in person or contact the DMV directly. Additionally, if you've changed your name along with your address, you'll need to handle that separately through a different process.

Processing times for online submissions are typically faster than mail or in-person visits. Most address changes submitted online are reflected in the Colorado DMV system within one to two business days. You won't receive a new physical card in the mail unless your license or ID is due for renewal anyway. Your address change takes effect in the system immediately, even though your physical card still shows your old address.

Practical Takeaway: If you only need to update your address and have your driver's license or ID number handy, the online option is usually the quickest way to complete the change without leaving home.

In-Person Address Changes at DMV Offices

Visiting a Colorado DMV office in person allows you to change your address while you're there and ask questions if needed. Colorado has DMV offices in most major cities and counties throughout the state. You can find the location nearest to you on the official Colorado DMV website, which lists all office addresses, phone numbers, and hours of operation. Some offices are open during standard business hours, while others offer extended evening or weekend hours to accommodate different schedules.

When you visit in person, bring your current driver's license or identification card and proof of your new address. Acceptable proof of address includes utility bills, lease agreements, mortgage statements, or mail from government agencies. The document should show your name and new address clearly. Most offices prefer documents dated within the last 60 days, though requirements may vary. If you recently moved and don't have a utility bill or lease in your name yet, contact the office ahead of time to ask what alternative documents they'll accept.

The in-person process involves waiting your turn—either by taking a number when you arrive or checking in through the office's system. When called, you'll speak with a staff member who will review your information and process the address change. The staff member will verify that the address you're providing is correct and ask where you're moving from. This conversation typically takes just a few minutes. The address update is entered into the system right away, and you'll receive confirmation before leaving the office.

One benefit of the in-person visit is that you can address any other DMV needs at the same time. If your license is expiring soon, you can renew it. If you need a replacement card for a damaged or lost license, you can request it during the same visit. You can also ask questions about vehicle registration, title transfers, or other DMV matters. Staff members can provide information about specific situations that might require more detailed explanation than you'd get through mail or online channels.

Wait times at DMV offices vary by location and time of day. Offices in larger cities typically have longer wait times, sometimes 30 minutes to an hour or more during peak times. Visiting early in the morning or mid-week (Tuesday through Thursday) often results in shorter waits than visiting on Mondays or Fridays. Some offices have systems where you can check wait times online before visiting, or you can call ahead to ask about current wait times.

Practical Takeaway: Plan to visit a DMV office during off-peak hours if possible, bring your license and proof of your new address, and consider handling any other DMV business you need while you're there.

Mail-in Address Change Methods

If you prefer not to visit an office or use the online system, you can change your address by mail. This method requires you to send specific documents to the Colorado DMV at its processing center. You'll need to complete a form and include proof of your new address along with your current driver's license or identification card information. The mail-in process takes longer than online or in-person methods—typically two to four weeks—but it can be convenient if you prefer to handle everything by post.

To use the mail option, contact the Colorado DMV to request an address change form or find the form on the DMV website. The form requires you to provide your current information, your new address, and your signature. You cannot simply send a letter to the DMV requesting an address change; you must use the official form. The form must be signed by you—unsigned or unsigned forms will be returned to you without processing.

When you prepare your mail package, include a copy of your current driver's license (front and back) and a document that proves your new address. Mail the package to the address listed on the DMV website for address change requests. Send it via regular mail or a trackable mail service if you want confirmation that it arrived. Include a return address on the envelope so the DMV can contact you if there are any problems with your submission.

The timeframe for processing mail-in address changes can be affected by the volume of requests the DMV receives. During busy periods, processing may take longer than the typical two to four weeks. If you don't see your address change reflected in the system after four weeks, you can contact the DMV to check the status of your request. Having your driver's license number ready when you call will help staff locate your request quickly.

One consideration with the mail-in method is that you're not able to handle any complications in real time. If the DMV has trouble reading your form or if your proof of address document isn't accepted, staff will mail you a notice asking for additional information or corrections. This back-and-forth can extend the timeline significantly. For this reason, some people find the in-person or online options more efficient
