Your Guide to Renewing Missouri Vehicle Registration Online
Understanding Missouri Vehicle Registration Renewal Basics
Vehicle registration renewal in Missouri is a process that vehicle owners must complete to keep their vehicle legally permitted to drive on public roads. The Missouri Department of Revenue handles vehicle registration and renewal services. Each vehicle registered in Missouri must have a current registration, which is displayed through a registration card and license plate tags.

Missouri registration renewal typically occurs annually or biennially, depending on the vehicle type and owner circumstances. Most passenger vehicles require renewal every two years. The registration renewal process involves submitting required information to the state, paying the associated renewal fee, and receiving updated registration documents and tags. The state has created online renewal options to give vehicle owners alternatives to visiting a physical location.
The online renewal system in Missouri is called the Missouri Online Services portal. This system allows eligible vehicle owners to renew their registration through their computer or mobile device without visiting a local license office. Not all registrations can be renewed online—some situations require in-person visits. Understanding which registrations can be handled online and which cannot is an important first step.
Current Missouri registration renewal fees vary based on vehicle weight and type. As of recent years, passenger vehicle registration fees typically range from $154 to $234 for a two-year renewal period. Commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and other specialty vehicles have different fee structures. Local county assessments may also apply in some cases, which can increase the total cost.
Practical takeaway: Before starting an online renewal, review your current registration card to confirm your vehicle type and last renewal date. This information helps determine if your vehicle is eligible for online renewal and when your registration expires.
Step-by-Step Guide to Accessing Missouri's Online Renewal System
To renew your Missouri vehicle registration online, you must first navigate to the Missouri Secretary of State's Online Services portal. The web address is sos.mo.gov/online-services. This portal is the official state gateway for various motor vehicle services, including registration renewal. You can reach this site from any internet-connected device, including smartphones, tablets, and computers.

Once you arrive at the Online Services portal homepage, look for the section related to vehicle services. The portal displays different service categories, and you will need to locate the motor vehicle registration renewal option. The layout is organized to group related services together, making navigation straightforward for most users.
Creating an account or logging in is the next step. If you have not used the Missouri Online Services portal before, you will need to create a new account. This requires a valid email address and a password of your choosing. The account creation process takes approximately five to ten minutes. If you have previously used the portal for another service, you can log in with your existing credentials.
After logging into your account, you will access the registration renewal form. This form requests specific vehicle and personal information. You will need to provide your current registration number, vehicle identification number (VIN), driver's license or state ID number, and current mailing address. The system uses this information to locate your vehicle record in the Missouri motor vehicle database.
The online form also includes sections for reporting any changes to your vehicle information. If your address has changed, if the vehicle was recently purchased, or if there have been modifications to the registered owner information, these changes should be noted during renewal. Providing accurate information is essential for the renewal to process correctly.
Practical takeaway: Have your current registration card and driver's license nearby before starting the online renewal process. These documents contain the specific numbers and information you will need to enter into the online form.
Documents and Information You Will Need to Have Ready
Before beginning your online renewal, gathering all necessary documents and information ensures the process moves smoothly without interruptions. The primary document you will need is your current vehicle registration card. This card contains your registration number, vehicle identification number, expiration date, and registered owner information. If you cannot locate your registration card, you may still proceed if you know your registration number and VIN.

Your driver's license or Missouri state ID is also required. The online system uses the identification number from your license or ID to verify your identity and match it with the vehicle registration record. This security measure helps prevent unauthorized renewals. If you have recently changed your name or moved, ensure your ID information is current, as mismatches can cause delays.
If your vehicle has had any ownership changes, lien information, or address changes since your last registration, you should have documentation related to these changes. For example, if you recently purchased the vehicle, having the title or bill of sale available helps clarify ownership. If someone has a lien against the vehicle, that lienholder information should be documented in your records.
Payment information must be ready before you begin. Missouri accepts multiple payment methods for online registration renewal, including credit cards and debit cards. Accepted card types typically include Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Have your payment card available and know the card number, expiration date, and CVV security code.
For some vehicle types, such as commercial vehicles or vehicles used for specific purposes, additional documentation may be necessary. For instance, if your vehicle is registered as a commercial vehicle, you may need to provide business information or proof of commercial use. Reviewing your specific registration type before starting helps identify any special requirements.
Practical takeaway: Create a small checklist with your registration number, VIN, driver's license number, and confirmation that your payment card is available. Check off each item before beginning your online renewal to avoid stopping midway through the process.
Situations Where Online Renewal May Not Be Available
While online renewal is convenient for many Missouri vehicle owners, certain situations require handling through other methods. Understanding when online renewal is not available prevents confusion and helps you plan accordingly. One common situation involves vehicles with outstanding violations or holds on their registration record. If your vehicle has unpaid traffic fines, parking tickets, or other violations that have resulted in a hold being placed on the registration, you cannot renew online.

Vehicles with changed ownership also typically cannot be renewed through the online system. If you recently purchased a vehicle, the title transfer process must be completed before renewal can occur. This usually requires an in-person visit or mail submission to process the title change. Once the ownership change is fully recorded by the state, you may then be able to renew online for subsequent renewals.
Vehicles that are registered as commercial, for-hire, or specialty use may have restrictions on online renewal. Commercial vehicles, taxi services, and vehicles used for specific business purposes sometimes require additional documentation or verification that cannot be completed through the automated online system. Contacting your local Missouri license office can confirm whether your vehicle type allows online renewal.
If your registration has been expired for an extended period—typically more than six months—the online system may not process the renewal. Severely overdue registrations may require an in-person visit to a local office to address the lapsed status. The state uses this requirement to ensure that vehicles with extended lapsed registrations are handled with additional scrutiny.
Changes to vehicle information such as adding or removing a co-owner, changing the registered address to outside of Missouri, or updating lienholder information may also require manual processing rather than online renewal. If your renewal involves any of these changes, the online system may direct you to contact a local office or submit documentation by mail.
Practical takeaway: Before beginning online renewal, read the system's initial eligibility check carefully. The online portal typically displays a message indicating whether your specific registration can be renewed online or if you must use an alternative method.
Completing Payment and Receiving Your Updated Registration
Once you have entered all required vehicle and personal information into the online form and confirmed that everything is accurate, you will proceed to the payment section. The online system displays the total renewal fee for your vehicle based on its weight, type, and the renewal period you selected. Review this amount carefully before submitting payment to ensure it matches what you expected.

Missouri's online system redirects you to a secure payment processing page when you proceed to payment. This page is encrypted and separate from the main state portal, providing additional security for your financial information. Enter your payment card details, including the card number, expiration date, name as it appears on the card, and CVV security code. Double-check all card information for accuracy before confirming the payment.
After you submit your payment, the system processes the transaction, which typically takes a few minutes. You will receive a confirmation message on the screen indicating whether the payment was successful. This confirmation page displays your transaction number, which you should save for your records. Many users take a screenshot or print this confirmation page as documentation of their renewal submission.
