Learn About Illinois Vanity License Plate Ordering
Understanding Illinois Vanity License Plates: What They Are and How They Work
A vanity license plate is a personalized vehicle registration plate that displays a custom combination of letters and numbers instead of the standard random format issued by the Illinois Secretary of State. Rather than receiving something like "ABC 1234," you can request plates that spell out words, names, dates, or meaningful phrases that reflect your personality, business, or interests. Illinois allows drivers to create these custom plates through a straightforward ordering process managed by the Secretary of State's office.

Vanity plates serve both practical and personal purposes. Many people use them to display their profession, hobby, or sense of humor. For example, a plumber might order "PIPE MAN," a teacher might choose "MR SMITH," or someone passionate about golf might select "FORE 1." Businesses frequently use vanity plates on company vehicles as a form of mobile advertising. The plates remain fully functional for vehicle registration and identification purposes—they're simply customized versions of standard plates.
Illinois offers vanity plates for both personal vehicles and commercial vehicles. The state maintains specific rules about what character combinations are permitted. The Secretary of State's office reviews all requests to ensure they don't contain offensive language, excessive symbols, or content that violates state guidelines. This review process helps maintain standards across all plates issued in the state.
Understanding how vanity plates differ from standard plates matters because it affects pricing, availability, and the ordering timeline. While standard registration plates are free with vehicle registration, vanity plates involve an additional fee. This fee covers the administrative costs of processing your request, reviewing it for compliance, and producing the customized plate. The process involves several steps, each with specific requirements and timeframes.
Practical takeaway: Vanity plates are custom vehicle registration plates available through the Illinois Secretary of State. They cost more than standard plates but allow you to display a personalized message. Understanding what they are helps you decide whether this option fits your needs and budget.
Eligibility Requirements and Vehicle Restrictions
To order vanity plates in Illinois, your vehicle must be currently registered in the state. You cannot order vanity plates before your vehicle has a valid Illinois registration. If you recently moved to Illinois, you'll need to complete your vehicle registration through the Secretary of State first, then you can request vanity plates. This requirement ensures that only registered vehicle owners within the state are requesting customized plates.

The vehicle itself must be in good standing with the state. This means your registration must be current and not suspended or revoked. If your registration has been suspended due to unpaid tickets, parking violations, or other infractions, you won't be able to order vanity plates until the suspension is lifted. Additionally, your vehicle cannot be marked as stolen or have any active liens that prevent you from making changes to the registration.
Vanity plates are available for most vehicle types registered in Illinois, including sedans, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles. However, certain specialty plates may have restrictions. For instance, if you hold specific specialty plates (such as military or disabled veteran plates), you may have limited options for customization, or you may need to follow additional procedures. The Secretary of State's office can provide information about your specific situation if you have a specialty plate.
Age and residency requirements align with standard vehicle registration rules in Illinois. The person ordering the vanity plates must be at least 18 years old and a resident of Illinois. If your vehicle is registered in someone else's name, that person must be the one to request the vanity plates. Some people register vehicles in their business name, and that business must be registered in Illinois for vanity plate ordering.
No criminal background checks or additional background investigations are required for vanity plate ordering. The approval process focuses solely on whether your requested character combination meets the state's content guidelines and whether you meet the basic registration requirements mentioned above.
Practical takeaway: You need a current Illinois vehicle registration and a vehicle in good standing with the state. Verify your registration status before ordering. If you have specialty plates or your vehicle is registered under a business name, confirm with the Secretary of State's office that your situation doesn't have additional restrictions.
The Vanity Plate Ordering Process and Methods
Illinois offers multiple methods for ordering vanity plates, giving you flexibility in how you submit your request. The most common method is ordering online through the Secretary of State's official website. The online system allows you to enter your desired character combination, check availability in real time, and complete your order from home. This method is convenient because you receive immediate feedback about whether your requested combination is available or if it conflicts with existing plates or violates content guidelines.

To order online, you'll need your vehicle registration information, driver's license number, and payment method. The Secretary of State's website has a dedicated section for vehicle services where you can navigate to the vanity plate ordering system. You'll enter your current license plate number, your vehicle identification number (VIN), and your desired vanity plate combination. The system checks against existing plates and guidelines instantly, showing you whether your choice is available.
You can also order vanity plates by mail. You'll need to complete the appropriate form from the Secretary of State's office and mail it along with payment and copies of required documents. This method takes longer since it involves postal delivery times and processing delays, but it's an option if you prefer not to order online. The form requires the same information as the online system: your vehicle registration details, current license plate number, VIN, and your desired plate combination.
A third option is visiting a Secretary of State facility in person. You can go to any of the regional offices throughout Illinois with your vehicle registration, driver's license, and payment information. Staff members can help you with the process and can also answer questions about the content guidelines or availability. This method allows you to discuss your plate choice before submitting, which can be helpful if you're uncertain whether your desired combination meets state rules.
Regardless of which method you choose, you'll need to provide proof that your vehicle is currently registered in Illinois. This typically means having your registration card or renewal notice available. If you're renewing your registration at the same time you're ordering vanity plates, you can often combine these processes to reduce trips and paperwork.
Practical takeaway: Choose the ordering method that works best for you: online (fastest), by mail, or in person. Have your registration information, driver's license number, and VIN ready. Online ordering shows you instantly whether your desired plate is available.
Content Guidelines and What You Cannot Request
The Illinois Secretary of State maintains content guidelines to ensure that vanity plates remain appropriate for all audiences. These guidelines exist to protect the integrity of vehicle registration and prevent offensive or inappropriate messages from appearing on roads throughout the state. Understanding what content is prohibited helps you avoid submitting requests that will be rejected, which delays the process.

The state prohibits vanity plates that contain obscenities or profanity in any form. This includes obvious curse words and creative misspellings designed to convey profane meanings. For example, plates cannot spell out common swear words or use numbers and letters together to create profane messages. The guidelines apply to all languages—content that would be considered offensive in any language spoken in Illinois is prohibited.
Content that is sexually explicit or makes sexual references is not permitted. This includes references to sexual acts, sexual organs, or sexual situations. The state applies a standard of what would be considered inappropriate for a family audience viewing from a neighboring vehicle on a public road. Plates suggesting illegal drug use or drug paraphernalia are also prohibited, as are plates that appear to glorify illegal activities.
The state also prohibits plates that could be confused with official government plates or emergency vehicle plates. This protects public safety by ensuring that only legitimate official vehicles display plates that might give them special authority or status. Additionally, plates cannot contain hateful language targeting protected groups based on race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, disability status, or sexual orientation.
Interestingly, some restrictions relate to character limitations rather than content. Vanity plates in Illinois can contain up to seven characters (letters and numbers combined). Spaces are not counted as characters but certain symbols and punctuation marks are not available. Hyphens are generally allowed, but you cannot use apostrophes, periods, or special characters like asterisks or dollar signs. The available characters on Illinois plates are: A-Z (letters), 0-9 (numbers), and the hyphen symbol.
The state may also reject combinations that could be confusing because they're too similar to existing plates or to standard registration plate formats. Additionally, plate combinations that are already in use by other Illinois vehicles cannot be
