Learn About Renewing Your Minnesota Real ID

Understanding Minnesota Real ID Requirements

Minnesota Real ID is a form of driver's license or identification card that meets federal security standards set by the Real ID Act of 2005. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security created these standards to make identification documents more secure and harder to counterfeit. Starting May 7, 2025, federal law requires that anyone using a driver's license or state ID card to board a domestic airplane or enter a federal building must have a Real ID-compliant document.

A Real ID looks similar to a standard Minnesota driver's license or ID card, but it includes a gold star in the upper right corner. This star indicates that the document meets all federal security requirements. Without this star, you may not be able to use your ID for air travel or entry to federal facilities, even though you can still use it for everyday activities like driving or opening a bank account.

Minnesota began issuing Real ID documents in 2009, so many residents already have one. If you received your license or ID card after that date, yours may already be Real ID-compliant. Checking whether your current document has the gold star takes just a moment — look at the upper right corner of your card. If you see the star, your ID meets federal requirements.

The Real ID standards require specific security features in how the document is made and what information it contains. These features make it much more difficult for someone to forge or alter an ID. The card also contains a machine-readable zone with encoded information that federal screeners can verify quickly at airports and federal buildings.

Practical Takeaway: Check your current Minnesota driver's license or ID card for a gold star in the upper right corner. If the star is there, your ID is already Real ID-compliant and you do not need to take any action. If there is no star, you may want to consider renewing your ID before May 2025.

Documents You Will Need to Bring

Minnesota requires specific documents to prove your identity, residency, and Social Security number when you renew your Real ID. Having the correct documents ready before you visit a Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) office will make the process faster and smoother. Missing documents may delay your renewal or require you to return with additional paperwork.

You will need to provide proof of identity. Acceptable documents include a current or recently expired U.S. passport, passport card, or passport book. If you do not have a passport, you can use a certified birth certificate obtained from the vital records office in the state or country where you were born. You may also use a consular report of birth abroad, a Permanent Resident Card (Green Card), or a foreign passport with an approved visa or travel permit.

To prove your Minnesota residency, bring a document dated within the last 30 days showing your current address. This could be a utility bill (electric, gas, water, or phone), a lease or mortgage statement, a property tax statement, or a bank statement. If you have recently moved and do not have a document in your new name yet, a piece of mail from a government agency addressed to your current address will work. Some people bring multiple documents just to be safe, which is perfectly acceptable.

You must also provide proof of your Social Security number. An original or certified Social Security card works well for this purpose. If you do not have a card, you can bring a W-2 form, 1040 tax return, or other official document from the federal government that shows your complete Social Security number. Pay stubs often show Social Security numbers, though some residents prefer to use tax documents for privacy reasons.

If you have legally changed your name since your last ID was issued, bring documentation of that change. This could be a marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, or adoption papers. Minnesota DVS staff will make a copy of these documents for their records.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of documents before visiting the DVS office: proof of identity (passport or birth certificate), proof of residency (utility bill dated within 30 days), proof of Social Security number (Social Security card or tax form), and any documents showing name changes. Bringing these documents with you prevents delays and extra trips.

Steps to Renew Your Real ID in Minnesota

Renewing your Real ID in Minnesota involves several clear steps. The process begins by visiting a Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services office in person — you cannot renew a Real ID entirely by mail or online. Minnesota has DVS locations throughout the state, with offices in most counties. You can find the office nearest you on the Minnesota Department of Public Safety website.

Before you visit, complete the Driver's License Application (Form DL-44) or the Identification Card Application (Form ID-16), depending on which document you need to renew. You can print these forms at home and fill them out, or you can fill them out at the DVS office. Many people complete the form at home to save time. On the form, make sure you check the box indicating you want a Real ID-compliant document — this is how you tell the DVS office you want the document with the gold star.

When you arrive at the DVS office, bring all required documents and your completed application form. You will give these to a DVS staff member. Staff will verify your identity, check your documents, and enter your information into the system. This verification step is important because it confirms you are who you say you are and that your documents are genuine.

You will have your photo and signature taken at the office. The photo becomes part of your new ID. DVS staff will ask you to look straight at the camera and keep a neutral expression. Your signature will also be captured and stored with your ID record.

You will pay the renewal fee when you complete the transaction. As of 2024, a four-year driver's license costs $48, an eight-year license costs $88, and an identification card costs $26 for four years or $46 for eight years. Minnesota accepts payment by cash, check, debit card, or credit card.

After your transaction is complete, you will receive a temporary paper ID that you can use until your permanent card arrives. Most people receive their Real ID in the mail within two to three weeks. The temporary document is valid for driving and identification purposes during this waiting period.

Practical Takeaway: Visit your nearest Minnesota DVS office with your documents and a completed application form. Request a Real ID-compliant card (the form has a checkbox for this). Pay the fee, have your photo and signature taken, and keep your temporary ID until your permanent card arrives in the mail.

Timeline and What to Expect

Understanding the timeline for renewing your Real ID helps you plan ahead so you have your new card when you need it. The entire process from start to finish typically takes three to four weeks under normal conditions, though times can vary depending on office workload and mail delivery speeds.

The time you spend at the DVS office itself usually ranges from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on how busy the office is that day and how complete your documents are. Bringing everything on your first visit prevents delays. Some DVS offices are busier during certain hours or days of the week. Visiting early in the morning or mid-week may mean shorter wait times than visiting on Friday afternoons or the first day of the month when many people come in.

After you leave the office, you will have a temporary paper ID that is valid immediately. This temporary document allows you to drive and use it for identification purposes right away. The paper ID is laminated and designed to last until your permanent card arrives.

Your permanent Real ID card is produced at a secure facility and then mailed to the address on file with Minnesota DVS. Standard mail delivery typically takes two to three weeks. If you live in the Twin Cities area, delivery may be slightly faster. If you live in a rural area, delivery may take a few days longer. Minnesota Post Office mail delivery timeframes apply to all ID renewals.

In rare cases, your application may need additional review. This might happen if there is a discrepancy in your documents, if your name has changed multiple times, or if there are other unusual circumstances. In these situations, DVS staff will contact you by phone or mail to request more information. This process can add one to two weeks to your timeline.

It is important to note that May 7, 2025 is when the federal requirement takes effect. If you plan to fly domestically or enter a federal building after this date, make sure your Real ID arrives well before then. Applying several months in advance gives you plenty of time to receive your card
