Overview of Southern Connecticut Gas Company Payment Methods
Southern Connecticut Gas, a subsidiary of Avangrid, serves approximately 155,000 customers across Connecticut. The company offers multiple ways for customers to pay their natural gas bills, each designed to fit different preferences and lifestyles. Understanding these payment options helps customers choose the method that works best for their situation.

The company accepts payments through traditional methods like checks and mail, modern online platforms, and automatic withdrawal from bank accounts. Each payment method has distinct features regarding processing time, fees, and convenience. Some methods provide immediate confirmation of payment, while others may take several business days to process. Customers can also pay in person at certain locations throughout the service territory.
Payment options have evolved significantly over the past decade. In 2015, Southern Connecticut Gas introduced their online payment portal, which expanded customer choices beyond phone and mail payments. Today, the company continues to add options to meet customer needs. According to utility industry data, approximately 60% of utility customers now use online or automated payment methods, though traditional methods remain available for those who prefer them.
Knowing your payment options matters because different methods suit different situations. A customer traveling frequently might prefer automatic bank withdrawals. Someone who likes to review bills before paying might choose online payment. Those without internet access can use mail or phone payments. The key is understanding what each option offers so you can select what fits your circumstances.
Practical takeaway: Review the payment methods available to you based on your comfort level with technology, access to banking, and preference for payment timing and confirmation methods.
Online Bill Payment Through the Customer Portal
Southern Connecticut Gas operates an online customer portal where account holders can view bills and make payments at any time. The portal is accessible through the company's website using a username and password. Once logged in, customers can see their current bill balance, payment history dating back several months, and consumption data. The online system allows one-time payments or scheduling of future payments.

To make a payment online, customers enter their payment amount and select a payment date. The system accepts payments from bank accounts (checking or savings) through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network. ACH payments typically process within 1-3 business days, meaning the payment date you select should account for this processing window. Some customers select a payment date several days before their due date to allow for processing time. The portal provides immediate confirmation of submitted payments, showing a confirmation number on screen.
The online portal offers several advantages. There are no fees for ACH payments made through the portal. Customers can pay at any hour, including evenings and weekends, without waiting for business hours. The system creates an automatic record of each transaction with a timestamp, which helps customers track their payment history. Customers can also set up notifications through the portal to remind them of upcoming bill due dates.
One consideration with online payments is that customers must have internet access and a bank account. The portal requires basic computer or smartphone skills to navigate. For customers unfamiliar with online systems, the learning curve may feel steep initially, though the interface is relatively straightforward. Some customers worry about sharing banking information online; Southern Connecticut Gas uses standard encryption security protocols similar to banking websites.
Account holders who forget their login information can reset their username or password through the portal's "Forgot Username/Password" section. The system sends a reset link via email. Customers without an existing online account can register on the Southern Connecticut Gas website by providing their account number, service address, and email address.
Practical takeaway: The online portal offers convenient, fee-free payments with immediate confirmation and 24/7 access. Set your payment date 2-3 business days before your due date to account for processing time.
Automatic Bank Account Withdrawal (Budget Billing)
Automatic payment through bank account withdrawal, often called automatic draft or auto-pay, withdraws your bill amount directly from your checking or savings account on a scheduled date each month. Southern Connecticut Gas offers this option, and it works through the ACH network, the same system banks use for most electronic transfers. Customers authorize the company to withdraw funds on a specific day, typically selected by the customer or set to a default date.

Setting up automatic withdrawal requires providing banking information—specifically, your bank account number and routing number. Customers can enroll through the online portal or by calling Southern Connecticut Gas customer service at 1-800-992-4425. The enrollment process takes approximately 5-10 minutes. Once enrolled, the company will attempt to withdraw the amount due on the scheduled date. If the withdrawal fails due to insufficient funds, the company may attempt again or contact the customer to arrange alternate payment.
Automatic withdrawal offers consistency and reduces the mental task of remembering to pay each month. For customers living paycheck-to-paycheck, choosing a withdrawal date shortly after payday ensures funds are available. The company typically does not charge fees for automatic ACH withdrawals. This method provides a paper trail through both your bank statement and the company's records, which is useful for tracking expenses and verifying payments.
Some customers hesitate to use automatic withdrawal due to concerns about control. If you set up automatic withdrawal, you can cancel it at any time by contacting customer service or through the online portal. You retain the ability to modify the withdrawal date or amount in some cases, though the most common approach is to let the scheduled amount process and then adjust future months if needed. If an unexpected charge occurs, customers can dispute it with their bank within 60 days of the transaction date under federal regulations.
Automatic withdrawal works well for customers with stable, predictable bills. However, during months with unusual usage—such as very hot summers requiring air conditioning or very cold winters requiring heating—the bill amount may increase. Some customers feel uncomfortable with variable amounts being withdrawn automatically for this reason.
Practical takeaway: Automatic withdrawal removes the need to remember monthly payments and incurs no fees, but schedule it for after your typical payday and monitor your account to ensure sufficient funds.
Phone Payment and Traditional Payment Methods
Southern Connecticut Gas accepts telephone payments by calling their customer service line at 1-800-992-4425. Phone payments are available during regular business hours, typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with limited weekend hours during peak seasons. A customer service representative takes payment information over the phone, including your account number and payment amount. Payments can be made using a debit card, credit card, or by providing bank account information for an ACH transfer.

Credit card and debit card payments made by phone typically process immediately or within one business day. However, using a credit card to pay your gas bill may incur a convenience fee—usually between 2% and 3% of the payment amount—charged by the payment processor. This fee varies depending on which card type is used. ACH payments made by phone, like those through the online portal, do not typically include fees but may take 1-3 business days to process. When making a phone payment, the representative provides a confirmation number, which you should write down and keep for your records.
Mail payments remain an option for customers who prefer not to use electronic methods. Checks or money orders should be sent to the address listed on your bill—typically a P.O. box for Southern Connecticut Gas. Payment by mail generally takes 5-7 business days to arrive and post to your account, so customers should mail payments well before the due date to avoid late fees. Including your account number on the check helps ensure the payment is credited to the correct account. Some customers include a copy of their bill stub with the mailed payment as additional verification.
In-person payment locations have become less common as utilities shift toward digital options. Historically, some utility companies operated payment centers or worked with retailers to accept in-person payments. Currently, Southern Connecticut Gas does not operate dedicated payment centers, though customers should contact the company to confirm if any special payment locations are available in their area.
Phone and mail payments work well for customers without internet access or who prefer not to use online systems. Older adults, customers with disabilities affecting computer use, and those experiencing homelessness or housing instability often rely on these traditional methods. Southern Connecticut Gas maintains these options to ensure payment access for all customer groups.
Practical takeaway: Phone payments offer real-time assistance but may include credit card fees; mail payments are free but require 5-7 days processing time, so plan accordingly before your due date.
